The Childhood and Youth Well-Being Index is a tool developed by the Instituto del Desarrollo de la Juventud (IDJ) to provide a comprehensive overview of the state of children and youth between the ages of 0 and 17 in Puerto Rico.
The fact sheet presents 27 indicators in five fundamental dimensions: economy, family, education, health and safety. Highlights:
• Puerto Rico ranks 31st in relation to the other 51 United States jurisdictions assessed in this Index, giving Puerto Rico a D rating.
• 58% of children living below the poverty threshold
• 39% of grandparents living with and taking care of their grandchildren
• 14% of teenagers who did not attend class because they felt unsafe at school or on the road
• 2% of children without health insurance
• the mortality in teens between 15 and 19 is 49,000
