The nutritional assistance program is the largest national program that provides financial support for the purchase of food for low-income families. In 2008 there were changes to the question wording. Integrating the concept of the "food stamp benefit card" into the question wording and removing the dollar portion of the question resulted in a statistically significant increase in the rate of beneficiaries due to a decrease in the rate of non-respondents to this question. Therefore, data before 2008 should not be compared to data after 2009. Data from 2008 and 2009 can be compared.
